the last night 《填一晚》

2023 | 28 min | In Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles | Dir Calvin Tsang

Hoi is a van driver who was a photographer before COVID-19. One day, he received a message from his ex-girlfriend Yin, who had already migrated. They met on the night before she left Hong Kong again.

After separating for a few years, the discussion on the long-forgotten love seemed to be the hidden agenda of this night. The two individuals, who had already embarked on completely different journeys in life, had to find a way out for their complicated relationship.

Director's Statement
As a former journalist, I've moved from shooting documentary news footage to trying on attempting short film direction, and I've realized that the line between truth and fiction is more blurred than it seems—news doesn't always capture the full reality, and films aren't always entirely fabricated. The experiences of Hongkongers in recent years are perhaps unmatched in the world: separations, reunions after long absences—these farewells and reconnections feel deeply personal, as if they belong to you and me.

For some viewers who can’t be in Hong Kong right now, I’m grateful to the cinematographers who’ve captured many of my favorite scenes—images that I find both beautiful and symbolic. I hope these visuals not only help the audience understand the story’s essence, but also ease a bit of their homesickness.
